Paris & the Heart of Normandy 2024 Resources Paris to Paris Viking®

paris to normandy river cruise

We perhaps have the most fun on the e-bikes (the river ship has 25 well-maintained electric bicycles onboard). Once onboard, we cruise along the Seine River to the Normandy coast, past chalk cliffs and gently rolling banks of green, squeezing through several locks, before cruising back to Paris. We’re content, however, before boarding, to simply walk until we can walk no more – taking in some of the best Paris arrondissements. In the “city of lights,” there are many non-touristy things to do beyond the Eiffel Tower. We’re sailing on the Scenic Gem on a 10-night cruise with the deluxe Scenic cruise line.

Looking for guidance on what to see and do on your trip?

You could drive through the beautiful Calvados countryside to Honfleur, a delightful seaside harbor and city of painters, or head to the windy cliffs of Étretat for a game of golf. Our MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences support sustainable tourism, offering our guests opportunities to directly impact the communities we explore in a positive way. You’ll pass the church and cemetery where Monet is buried and the Hotel Baudy, where his painter friends... Monet often painted the little riverside town of Vernon, so you are likely to recognize scenes the master rendered in oils on your way to his home in the village of... If your cruise package includes a group arrival transfer or if you have purchased a private transfer, you will be greeted by a Uniworld representative and transferred to the ship. Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip.

Today, you'll own the night at the château as you are feted at a private reception and dinner inside its opulent ballroom, music playing. Join CroisiEurope for an art- and culture-filled cruise on the Seine River. Visit celebrated museums— including the Musée Marmottan Monet—as well as the lovely home of Claude Monet and his supreme gardens in Giverny. Enjoy thematic tours of cities and villages that were part of the French Impressionist movement, such as Barbizon, Rouen, and Honfleur.

Experiences

The Louvre is the world's largest art museum and a historic monument in Paris, France. Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited throughout its halls, and one could easily spend many days attempting to see it all. Along with an expert guide, you'll optimize your time at the Louvre with a fascinating tour of its highlights, including the Mona Lisa, The Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Venus de Milo and many more.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm). We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you.

Our itinerary will take you from Paris to Giverny, Rouen, and beyond, in a small ship. We'll keep you up-to-date with our latest news, travel inspiration and special promotions. Hop into a retro sidecar for a thrilling ride through Paris at its most romantic-in the evening when the reason it's known as "The City of Lights" becomes apparent. Coast along the riverbanks of the Seine, zip past such sights as the glittering Eiffel Tower and the Luxembourg Gardens, then top off your ride with a champagne toast.

2023 listener trip to Paris, the River Seine, and Normandy's D-Day beaches - iHeart

2023 listener trip to Paris, the River Seine, and Normandy's D-Day beaches.

The landscapes of the Seine Valley, Normandy and the cities of Honfleur, Rouen and Paris will be offered to you during a charming trip aboard one of our 4 anchor or 5 anchor boats. As always, our attentive onboard staff will ensure you a comfortable, gastronomic cruise, full of color and memories. You can’t do a Normandy river cruise like this in winter (the season is spring to fall). There’s no extra charge for shore excursions; cocktails, premium wines (French on our cruise) and soft drinks; dinner in the specialty restaurant; mini-bar restocked daily; tipping; room service; and even one bag of complimentary laundry. And in Paris, which book-ends this cruise, swans gliding unruffled on the river add an air of serenity to this vibrant city of ineffable charm.

Hotel Mercure Blois Centre

Of course no trip to Normandy is complete without a visit to the D-Day landing beaches. In fact, this is the only church in the world with two ship hulls used as a roof. Set against the cobble stone streets and medieval buildings, it’s a sight to behold. Set along the Normandy coast up just a ways from the Seine River, the white cliffs, green landscape, and long beaches made this a popular spa town in the 18th and 19th centuries.

There are moments when we travel that move us on an otherworldly level—experiences that stir a profound emotional connection. On your full-day outing, you’ll visit Normandy’s beaches, with a choice to venture to either the American, British and Commonwealth, or Canadian beaches. After, you’ll partake in a private ceremony at the Omaha Beach Memorial—a sentimental remembrance of Operation Overlord.

One million Canadians served during WWII, and 14,000 participated in the landing. Exhibits describe both life at home during the war and the service of—and sacrifices made by—the men who fought. Caudebec-en-Caux, a lovely little town on the right bank of the Seine Estuary, is your base for one of two very different excursions.

Excursions may run 2–3 hours, or even longer, such as going to the beaches and cemetery in Normandy, which requires several hours each way on a bus. Buses are included when necessary because of distance or accessibility. I’ve taken my share of food tours worldwide, but having a Paris food tour offering on Viking River Cruises was a no-brainer. Our small group roamed the city on foot and by Paris Metro to taste our way through five or six local hotspots. I love any reason to learn things that help me answer Jeopardy questions.
